garden rigamajig

This is the start of my farm guide!

This will also act as a library to connect my farm guides when they're finished.

These will also be updated as I make new discoveries and such.

Might be overhauled in the future when I have more time.

The season specific guides will have a heavier focus on giant crops, because who doesn't want potatoes the size of boulders, eh?

However, before I get into the season specifics, we gotta know the basics!

Grab your hats, tools, and friends!

Plots

As you all know, you can't make planters anymore, and plots are the way to go.

I do suggest that Wormwood plants seeds on plots too though, I'm fairly certain that you can only water plot soil.

Of course, you're going to need the garden rigamajig, watering can, garden hoe, and I strongly recommend a shovel!

Placing your plot

Pick a spot, not too far from base, you're going to want some space.

Also consider the nearest pond when doing so, this may also affect your base placement, depending on your playstyle that is!

Personally, I wouldn't go for anything bigger than a 2x2 tile farm plot, but that doesn't mean you cant!

2x2 on the left, 2x1 in the middle, 1x1 on the right

I recommend only 9 plants per plot, if you manage to cram more than that on a single plot, you'll stress them out, and we can't have that if we want giant crops.

You may want ice fling-o-matics nearby for summer, note that they do not water your plants for you.

A plot can carry 100 points of moisture.

A watering can, or a water balloon will increase this level by 25 points.

You also don't have to worry about giving them too much water!

Depending on temperature, the moisture level will decrease at a rate of 0 to 24 points per day.

The least decrease in winter, and the most in summer.

Rain will increase the moisture level by 1.5 points per second, this does depend on the rate at which is it raining.

Unwatered plants are unhappy plants, accumulating stress points(We'll talk about that later).

Also be sure to dig up any garden detritus as soon as possible!

Tending to your plants

I do suggest grabbing a Gardeneer Hat when possible, it'll make this easier for ya.

Once you've planted your seeds(any) you must care for them...

Our plant pal Wormwood doesn't require a Gardeneer hat to see what a plant needs.

Aside from that, you must make sure the plot is watered, technically you don't need it at 100% moisture levels, but I tend to do that in case I'm caught away from base for a day while trying to farm.

Interacting with the plants

You're going to want to talk with the plants every growth stage.

Alternatives include:

-Wormwood's blooming

-Panflute

-One man band

-Shell bell

-Strident Trident

-Gnarwail horn

-Beefalo horn

->Note that Wes cannot talk to the plants, meaning Wes requires one of the items above.

If you don't speak with a plant during a growth stage, it will gain a stress point.

Families and Spacing

Suprisingly, plants can get lonely.

When possible, you're going to want to make sure the plants aren't lonely.

A plant wants to be in a group of the same plant.

There must be 4 of the same plant within a 1.5 tiles radius, otherwise you'll begin stressing them out.

As for spacing, again, keep only 9 plants to a tile, otherwise, once more, you'll be stressing them out.

As for another spacing tip, if you wish to farm weeds like Forget-me-lots, you'll want to keep them separate. The detection range for weeds is also 1.5 tiles, but I'd put them farther away just to be safe.

Dealing with Weeds

Weeds are a nuisance in our world, but they can be surprisingly more dangerous in the Constant.

Every seed planted(random seeds from birds) has a 20% chance to grow into a weed. Right when it grows into one, I suggest you dig it up immediately.

I will tell you now, that some of the weeds have actual uses.

First off, Forget-me-lots.

From the wiki

They're the most common, and have a chance to grow again in nearby tiles days after it has been dug up. The chance of more Forget-me-lots growing increases with the amount of Forget-me-lots in the surrounding area.

They can be harvested for.. well.. Forget-me-lots, which are a weak sanity food, but can be made into tea.

Next up, Fire Nettles..

From the Wiki

When they're all grown up, touching them will cause you to take 6 damage, and increase your temperature by 60 degrees over 1 minute.

Wormwood is immune to the effects of this weed.

You can pick Fire Nettles to get Fire Nettle Fronds, picking them will cause the same effect as simply touching the plant.

The same goes for eating it.

This can be used as an assist in winter, having a portable heating device in your pocket at the cost of 6 damage when eaten.

Tillweed.

From the Wiki

The Tillweed is a tricky weed that likes to add detritus to your gardens once every 0.75th of a day, or 1 day. This plant is the speedrunner when it comes to stressing out your crops.

I don't know a whole lot about this one since I somehow haven't encountered it yet.

The nastiest of them all, Spiny Bindweed.

user uploaded image

From the Wiki

The Spiny Bindweed won't actively hinder you, that is, until you try to dig up or harvest a plant nearby.

At this point, it will do 10 damage to you, and trap you in a circle of binding roots. Each root has 40 health, killing one will cause the rest to go away.

Wormwood is once again, Immune to this.

At this point, you've probably conquered the blasted weeds...

Seasons and rotting

Every plant has it's preferred season of growing, some have many, others have one. Garlic grows all year.

Plants grow faster in their preferred season, and gain stress points when growing off season.

Plants do require light, so they'll grow slower in winter regardless of the preferred season. This can be negated by a dwarf star, this also applies to the caves.

A typical farm plant lasts 4 days after becoming ripe before it rots, 6 days for an unpicked giant crop.

If the seeds were planted by Wormwood, they'll last a whopping 50% longer!

Rotten plants will stress out other plants nearby, and have a 5% chance to spawn a fruit fly when picked(Doesn't apply to giant crops).

However, a rotten plant will grow back into a sprout after 4 to 5 days, but it cannot grow into a giant crop.

If there are 15 or more fully grown or rotten plants within a 1 tile radius, the lord of the fruit flies just might show up, but only after dat 35.

Dealing with stress

Plants can definitely get stressed out. But, we wanna avoid that if possible. Low stress plants grow far faster than plants under high stress.

In order to keep the stress low, you'll have to put all the other things together.

Make sure the plants have been tended to by a player, or a friendly fruit fly.

Make sure the plots are kept watered.

Be sure to dig up the weeds from the moment you see them.

Ensure the plants have family nearby.

Ensure the nutrients are all stable, or in the plus(talk about that later)

There are ranges at which stress effects the crop output:

Stress Points

0 to 1 = Giant Crops

2 to 6 = 1 crop + 2 crop seeds

7 to 11 = 1 crop + 1 crop seed

12+ = 1 crop, no seeds for you.

I don't think there is a way to check stress levels without some sort of debug menu or mod.

The best you can do is babysit your plots for a few days, and if done right, you'll be set on food for awhile.

I'm fairly certain that you cannot reduce stress points that a plant has already accumulated.

It's even better when you have others to play with.

As you'd have to worry less about seasonal preparation while farming, meaning more food.

Extras + Tips

Prepare for winter!

I suggest filling up a few watering cans in advance before winter hits, as your aren't going to be filling those at frozen ponds.

Learn the looks of the weeds in their growth stages to avoid stress points.

Do attempt to research all the plants with the Gardeneer hats.

For the fastest growth, ensure there is a dwarf star nearby.

Do help out around the farms if someone is talking to numerous plants, can't stress this enough, it's easier to feed everyone if someone helps the farmer from time to time.

Spring is the best season to farm, most plants favour spring, and it rains enough that you might not need to worry about manually watering the plots. If you have a friendly fruit fly, you might be able to automate a single tile for giant crops.

Wickerbottom's book "Applied Horticulture" can instantly grow multiple crops, however it will not produce giant crops. As a personal preference, I'd stick to using that book on berry bushes, grass, and saplings.
